Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science


The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science develops nursing professionals into nurse leaders capable of excelling in service, administration, education, and research. Students will have the skills to engage in critical thinking, to inform research, practice, and policy using the evidence base, conduct research to contribute to the body of knowledge in nursing, and to anticipate future trends in the field. Students are expected to gain expertise in one area of research and to harmonize knowledge in this area for use in other disciplines. The curriculum is designed to foster self-directed learning through information technology and the vast resources available at the Faculty of Nursing. 

Many doctoral students spend time overseas studying with an expert and complete their proposal abroad. FON was the first nursing faculty in Thailand selected by the Ministry of University Affairs to operate a Collaborative PhD Program with universities abroad. Currently 16 universities in Australia, Canada and the USA are part of our collaborative program.

 

The main focus of this program is to cultivate a teaching and learning process for nursing knowledge development.  The process includes an environment promoting academic exchange, collaboration, networking, and partnering with international nursing institutions.  The program strives to maintain international standards and the Faculty of Nursing provides a diverse learning environment that draws upon faculty trained overseas, many earning a master or doctoral degree, international students, and regular international guest lecturers.

  Upon completion of the program students will have the following competencies:

  • Knowledge in and a deep understanding of nursing science, with the ability to analyze and critically assess important issues and changing knowledge in nursing science, as well as changing professional regulations both domestically and internationally.
  • Apply technical research and integrate knowledge from research studies to develop conclusions accepted by the field of nursing science.
  • Develop and conduct major research studies on complex issues related to a generating new knowledge pertaining to health care development, quality of life and the nursing profession.
  • Evaluate and analyze new research findings and theory by integrating concepts from nursing and related sciences, and ability to develop guidelines for solving health care problems using creativity and novel treatment methods.
  • Use creativity in presenting knowledge in academic and professional nursing settings, ability to plan, analyze and solve complex problems, motivation for continuous self-development and organization improvement. Demonstrate outstanding leadership in academic and professional nursing.
  • Communicate, share knowledge and academic information to the public using current technology, commensurate with both national and international standards.
  • Possess academic and professional integrity and ethics, honesty and a sense of personal sacrifice and social responsibility.
  • Be both a leader and a follower and work as part of a team. Act as a leader to solve complex ethical problems in academia or while practicing, and have respect for the value and worth of human beings.

 

 

PhD Curriculum

Two doctoral tracks are offered; Type 1 – Thesis only and Type 2 – Coursework and Thesis. The thesis only track is appropriate for students with research and publication expertise while the coursework and thesis track provides students with a strong foundation in research methodology. In addition, students are required to take part in the following ongoing academic activities to building their research skills:

 

Seminars

To promote a scholarly environment and to provide students the opportunity to develop public speaking and presentation skills, students are required to present a seminar on a topic related to their thesis once every semester for at least 3 semesters.  Attendance at student seminars is mandatory.

Research Practicum

Students gain invaluable research experience through a research practicum conducted under the supervision of FON faculty. Type 1 students must complete a 240-hour practicum while Type 2 students must complete a 180-hour practicum. Students have the opportunity to join ongoing research projects at FON and to gain experience at any stage of the research process such as writing grant proposals, collecting data, analyzing data, developing a data collection instrument, writing a research report or presenting findings. Research practicum allows students to experience research in an academic environment and to take part in collaborative research projects with governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as local community groups. Half of the research practicum hours can be completed abroad at a foreign institution.

 

Qualifying Exams

Qualifying exams allow students to demonstrate a basic understanding of knowledge in nursing, nursing philosophy and theory, research methodology, and an area of specialization. Students must pass their qualifying exams prior to developing their dissertation topic to ensure that they have the skills necessary to successfully conduct the dissertation.

Dissertation

Under supervision of a faculty advisor, students will develop, plan, implement, and analyze original research in the student’s area of specialization. Students must develop a dissertation proposal to be presented and approved by the student’s dissertation committee. After completion of research and the dissertation itself, students must undergo a dissertation defense. Students have the option of conducting their research abroad and writing their dissertation with an overseas expert in conjunction with an advisor from the Faculty of Nursing.

 

Publication

Part of the dissertation must be published and/or accepted for publication in a program-approved peer-reviewed journal or other academic forum, such as a conference proceeding book.  Published work must be accessible in print or electronic form.

Full-Time Study

Duration: 3 years (6 regular semesters and 3 summer sessions)

The PhD program is typically completed in 3 years. The period of study shall not exceed four academic years.

The program begins with an orientation in early August.
