Doctor of Philosophy Program in Nursing Science
(International Program)
Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD) program believes that nursing profession has a social responsibility to provide health services that requires knowledge and understanding in nursing science and other related sciences, abilities to generate and disseminate quality research and abilities to use empirical evidence for developing health service system to meet the client's needs based on cultural diversity and ethnic over the lifecycle under the global and social changes. Also, nursing profession must have a professional responsibility, moral, and ethics which accompany with the advancement of sciences and current digital technology.
This program is aimed at the production of doctoral graduates as knowledgeable researchers and scholars who have a deep understanding on nursing science, a critical thinking, and a conceptualization. In addition, they have a high potential to create a new body of knowledge and innovation through the utilization of sophisticated research process in order to meet health needs based on cultural diversity, both local and global levels. Doctoral graduates must also demonstrate an outstanding leadership, work as part of a team, have an effective communication and abilities to use appropriate digital technology, and engage in collaborative and initiative national and international networks including inside and outside of nursing profession.
The learning activities of this program focus on fostering the students to become a global citizenship who is a knowledge seeker and is knowledgeable to grasp the change of global situation, health policy, and national and global health system, to be able to continually monitor academic and technology progress, and to share a learning experience and research between the students and teachers in order to generate, analyze, and synthesize the body of knowledge, and innovation, as well as to make decision effectively.
Program Goals
The PhD programs prepares graduates to:

Create a quality research in accordance with the international standard to develop a new body of health related knowledge and innovation based on a variation of culture

Analyze and synthesize a body of knowledge from research into the development of health and service systems for the quality of nursing and the use of resources

Disseminate knowledge and exchange of information, both national and international through the appropriate use of digital technology

Communicate, collaborate, and initiate networks effectively with individuals and organizations both within and outside nursing profession
Curriculum
Two doctoral tracks are offered; Type 1 – Dissertation only and Type 2 – Coursework and Dissertation. The dissertation only track is appropriate for students with research and publication expertise while the coursework and dissertation track provides students with a strong foundation in research methodology. Type 2 recruits both graduates from master’s degree (Type 2.1) and bachelor’s degree (Type 2.2)
In addition, students are required to take part in the following ongoing academic activities to building their research skills:
Seminars
To promote a scholarly environment and to provide students the opportunity to develop public speaking and presentation skills, students are required to present a seminar on a topic related to their dissertation once every semester for at least 3 semesters. Attendance at student seminars is mandatory.
Research Practicum
Students gain invaluable research experience through a research practicum conducted under the supervision of FON faculty. Type 1 students must complete a 240-hour practicum while Type 2 students must complete a 180-hour practicum. Students have the opportunity to join ongoing research projects at FON and to gain experience at any stage of the research process such as writing grant proposals, collecting data, analyzing data, developing a data collection instrument, writing a research report or presenting findings. The research practicum allows students to experience research in an academic environment and to take part in collaborative research projects with governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as local community groups. Half of the research practicum hours can be completed abroad at a foreign institution.
Qualifying Exams
Qualifying exams allow students to demonstrate a basic understanding of knowledge in nursing, nursing philosophy and theory, research methodology, and an area of specialization. Students must pass their qualifying exams prior to developing their dissertation topic to ensure that they have the skills necessary to successfully conduct the dissertation.
Dissertation
Under supervision of an advisory committee, students will develop, plan, implement, and analyze original research in the student’s area of specialization. Students must develop a dissertation proposal to be presented and approved by the student’s dissertation committee. After completion of research and the dissertation itself, students must undergo a dissertation defense. Students have the option of conducting their research abroad and writing their dissertation with an overseas expert in conjunction with an advisor from the Faculty of Nursing.
Publication
Part of the dissertation must be published and/or accepted for publication in a program-approved peer-reviewed journal or other academic forum, such as a conference proceeding book. Published work must be accessible in print or electronic form.
Full-Time Study
Duration: 3 years (6 regular semesters)
The PhD program is typically completed in 3 years. The period of study shall not exceed five academic years. The program begins with an orientation in late July and the classes start in early August.

Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Science (PhD.) program believes that nurses in all domains of practice, including nurse practitioners, nursing scholars, and nurse researchers, have a leadership in the health system through enhancing the health of all age groups and health status. Nurses must integrate knowledge from nursing and related sciences, apply knowledge from research work and process, develop research study to drive a policy and quality improvement of care in the health system, create a body of knowledge for health and further development of innovation and technology to meet the demand caused by situational change, and be a self-lifelong learning.
Nursing science is a body of knowledge related to health care of human in all age groups and health status including individual, family, and community level. Human consists of four aspects including physical, psychological, socio cultural, and spiritual. Healthcare is a practice to meet the health needs including the practice for health promotion, illness and injury prevention, nursing care, rehabilitation, and the end of life care by integrating evidence-based knowledge from nursing science, medical science, related science, research study, ethics, the code of conduct for nurses, the art of nursing, legislation, and experiences based on good relationship.
