Center Spotlight

The Faculty of Nursing oversees nine Centers for Excellence in Nursing Research founded in 2013. One of the Centers for Excellence is the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation.

Dr. Sombat Skulphan is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University and the Chair of the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation.

He was recently interviewed to find out more about the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation.

Please describe your role at the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation.

I am the Chair of the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation. I oversee all of the research endeavors at the center

What is the purpose of the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation?

Currently, we are promoting learning and teaching methods to upgrade quality standards, conducting research about learning and teaching, and knowledge management.

What are some of the recent initiatives of the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation?

At the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation, we are working on research project proposals. We are working on three projects at the moment, but hope to start more soon. 21st Century skills is something we have been working on with the faculty. We are finding the students have the skills, but some faculty do not. So we are conducting surveys to find the skill level of the teachers and then working to increase their skills to keep up with the ever-changing world of technology.

How long have you been the chair of the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation?

I have been the chair for two years, there are four years in each term. I have worked at the Faculty of Nursing for 19 years.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your time with FON and the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation thus far?

The highlight of my time with FON and the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation thus far was receiving a certificate of Online Learning from Chiang Mai University in 2017. I was honored to receive this certificate from the interim president of Chiang Mai University. Another rewarding experience has been creating the program, Science and Art for Happiness Creation”. I have been invited by many to share this wisdom over the past few years.

Do you have additional information about the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation that you would like to share?

We are working on many things to improve the quality of the center and feel that we will be able to reach all of our goals. Though the Center for Quality Development in Nursing Education and Innovation research is currently a small project, we are working hard to start new projects. Currently, we are focusing on collaborations with other institutes in Thailand. We have started lunchtime activity groups to give teachers resources they may not have otherwise. Each group meeting presents new technology information. We meet one to two times a month.
