Publication: A moral and humanitarian imperative: the protection of health workers in war and conflict

Nurses and other health professionals around the world face the dangers of both physical and psychological injuries as well as death when their lives are endangered during wars and violent conflict.

Recently there have been renewed calls to protect the safety of the global health workforce during conflicts.

The risks happened to health care workers can be torture, abuse, kidnapping, forced displacement due to attacks, poor mental health, injury, lack of supplies and equipment for their work, and human rights violations due to treatment of both sides of conflicts.

It is critical that nurses and other health professionals around the world voice their criticisms about the lack of accountability for attacks on health workers, patients and health facilities. 

Governments and the UN need to enact their global committment to Resolution 2,286 to provide protection, to undertake real action to stop and prevent assaults on health services and health workers in conflict zones and bring the perpetrators to justice.
