Publication: Self-Selected and Prescribed Intensity Exercise to Improve Physical Activity Among Inactive Retirees

BACKGROUND:

Retirement is a key transition that influences the formation of the consequent physical activity. Older adults are recommended to participate in activities with an accumulation of moderate intensity, aerobic physical activity at least 30 min/day for 5 days per week to maintain cardiorespiratory health. Poor adherence to exercise programs may affect the intervention effect on behavioral changes. Researchers are interested in the findings of keeping positive affective experiences to improve exercise adherence over the last decade.

METHODS:

A randomized controlled study explored the effects of two intensity-oriented exercise interventions on affect to exercise and physical activity behavior. Inactive retirees finished the 12-week group-based exercise intervention and 3-month telephone follow-up with 27 participants in the self-selected intensity group and 26 participants in the prescribed intensity group, followed by repeated measure.

CONCLUSION:

Findings suggest that future exercise programs use self-selected intensity exercise programs to improve pleasure affect to exercise.
