The Faculty of Nursing is honored to welcome visiting professors from around the world who hold academic positions from numerous prestigious universities and organizations. They provide special workshops and lectures, teach in FON’s degree programs, serve on doctoral committees, and conduct collaborative research with FON faculty and students.

Kay C. Avant, RN, PhD, FNI, FAAN
UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing, United States of America
Dr. Kay C. Avant is the retired Robert L. and Laura D. Zeller Distinguished Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She was twice selected as a Fulbright Professor of Nursing Science for posts in Thailand and Norway. She has extensive experience with international and cross-cultural teaching and research. Kay has been a journal reviewer for several international journals, serving on the editorial board for Acta Paulista de Enfermagen and Pacific Rim International Journal of Nursing Research.

Rozzano C. Locsin, PhD, RN, FAAN
Tokushima University, Japan; Florida Atlantic University, United States of America
Dr. Rozzano Locsin is an Emeritus Professor at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University, where he was the John F. Wymer Distinguished Professor of Nursing, and a Professor Emeritus at Tokushima University. He is the author of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing: A Model for Practice, and has edited and co-authored several other books. As a Fulbright Scholar, he developed the first master’s program in nursing in Uganda, as well as the first community-based University Nursing Education Program. He has served, or serves, on the editorial board for Journal of Art and Aesthetics in Nursing and Health Sciences, Journal of Medical Investigation, Journal of Nursing Investigations, Pacific Rim International Journal of Nursing Research, and International Journal for Human Caring.

Marcia A. Petrini, PhD, MPA, RN, FAAN
Wuhan University HOPE School of Nursing, China
Dr. Marcia A. Petrini is an Emeritus Professor and the founding Dean of the HOPE School of Nursing at Wuhan University, China. She has extensive experience teaching at and consulting with multiple universities in China, Japan, and other parts of the world. Marcia is routinely invited to be a special consultant for the World Health Organization, as well as the International Council of Nurses in addition to being a recipient of the China Medal of Friendship, the highest honor bestowed upon non-citizens of that country. She is a reviewer for a number of SCI journals and a Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University.

Shefaly Shorey, PhD, RN, RM, FAAN
National University of Singapore, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Singapore
Dr. Shefaly Shorey, Associate Professor and Vice Dean (Administration) at the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), is a globally recognized leader in maternal, paternal, and child health research. With over 260 peer-reviewed publications and recognition among Stanford University's Top 2% most-cited scientists since 2021, her work spans perinatal health, healthcare education innovation, and family-centered interventions. Dr. Shorey is an expert in qualitative research methodologies and serves on the editorial boards of several leading journals. She received the prestigious President’s Award for Nurses (2021) and chairs the Southeast and East Asian Nursing Education and Research Network (SEANERN). Dr. Shorey has secured research grants totaling USD 10 million and has been honored with multiple awards for her contributions. Her research informs national policy in Singapore, where she serves as an advisor to the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), earning the ‘Friends of MSF’ award. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2024).

Barbara A. Smith, PhD, RN, FACSM, FAAN
Florida State University, College of Nursing, United States of America
Dr. Barbara A. Smith is a Professor at both Florida State University and University of South Florida Colleges of Nursing, and Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and University of Malawi Kamazu College of Nursing. As a nurse and an exercise physiologist, Dr. Smith has conducted numerous randomized clinical trials (RCTs) using exercise and nutrition interventions in chronically ill individuals with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV, cancer, and Parkinson's disease. Her extensive experience working in different countries in Africa to provide HIV care and treatment includes cooperating with various governments and organizations to increase medical, nursing, and midwifery capacity in Rwanda. She was invited to serve as a consultant to the World Health Organization to transform nursing and medical education globally. Currently, she is volunteering her time doing medical outreach to impoverished peoples in South and Central America.
Teresa Stone, RN, RMN, BA, MHM, PhD, FACMHN
University of Newcastle School of Nursing and Midwifery, Australia
Dr. Teresa Stone is Conjoint Professor at the University of Newcastle and a Visiting Professor at Wuhan University, China. Previously, she was the programme convenor for the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle. Teri has also served as Editor-in-Chief of Nursing & Health Sciences, a premier international journal focusing on the exchange of knowledge in nursing and health sciences, particularly between the East and West.

Sue Turale, DEd, MNursSt, FACN, FACMHN
Visiting Professor at Chiang Mai University, Faculty of Nursing; Editor of Pacific Rim International Journal of Nursing Research
Professor Sue Turale has a long track record of clinical, managerial, and academic leadership in Australia and a number of Asian countries. Since 2005, she has been a visiting professor at Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Nursing and has held positions at Yamaguchi University in Japan and Ewha Women’s University in Korea. She has a high publication rate as a researcher, being listed in Stanford University’s Top 2% of scientists for the last two years. Sue has held a number of positions as professor and nursing journal editor, including Editor-in-Chief of Nursing & Health Sciences and International Nursing Review, the voice of the International Council of Nurses in Switzerland. Her current work focuses on assisting graduate students in their PhD and master's degree journeys and helping them and academic staff to write for international publications. As a visiting professor, she has worked in countries across the South-East Asia-Pacific region, including China, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. She continues to contribute to capacity building in nursing, midwifery, and healthcare systems through education, research, and scholarship development.
